Gerald Victor Woolcott 'Gerry' Joynt was born on 13th September 1883 in Elsternwick, Victoria (Australia). He was the eldest of three sons of Edward Joynt and Alice Woolcott. [1]
On 1st July 1913 Gerry married Phyllis Fenton in St Mary's Church of England (Anglican Church), Caulfield, Victoria. [2] They had a daughter, Gwendoline.
He worked as a cashier.
On 25th September 1915 Gerry was commissioned in the Australian Imperial Force, his young nation's overseas expeditionary force for the (First World) War. [3] Allocated to the 57th Australian Infantry Battalion, he embarked for Europe with reinforcements on 16th December 1916 at Melbourne aboard HMAT Medic A7; joining his battalion in the trenches of the Western Front in the New Year.Gerry was killed on 25th September 1917 by a high explosive shell just after C Company 'went over the top' at Glencorse Wood while attacking Polygon Wood. He was buried in a little cemetery near Dickebusch with Captain Dickenson of B company and Captain Elliott who were also killed by the same shellburst. [4][5] Gerald Victor Woolcott Joynt's name is located at panel 164 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra; The Huts Cemetery, Ypres, Flanders; and on the Cenotaph at Croydon, Victoria. [6]
Following the war, his widow was issued his service medals: British War Medal and Victory Medal. Gerry's younger brother, Reginald, served as a missionary to the Indigenous people of the Northern Territory for many years. His youngest brother, William, was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery during the war.
