Biography

Richard Jukes was baptised on the 1st July 1781 in Ruiton (In the Independent Chapel Upper Gornal) his father was recorded as Richard Jukes. [1]

Richard Jukes was a currier, buying tanned animal hides and processing them to become leather. A currier was a specialist, dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather was stretched and burnished for a uniform thickness and suppleness, then dyed. The finished leather was then sold on to saddlers, shoemakers, glovers etc. The Jukes family made industrial and domestic bellows among other products.

Richard Jukes married Phoebe Field on the 7th May 1804 in Rowley Regis Staffordshire (Though Richard did not come from Rowley Regis, there was a large Jukes family there – were they related?). They were married by Banns, their sponsor was W.M.B.Hughes

Richard and Pheobe Jukes lived in Ruiton Hall (Upper Gornall) and all their children were baptised in Ruiton Chapel. In 1827 Richard Jukes of Gornal, Sedgley had a workshop at Prince’s End (Tipton) and in the Sedgley Commercial Directory of 1835, Richard Jukes is listed as a Currier in Upper Gornall.
