Julia was born in 1825 and was the granddaughter of a Hessian soldier who remained in Canada after the end of the American was for Independence. Julia's family name, Kagle-Kaigle-Goeckel and Ketchell, were often spelled differently in church records. Her baptism surname [1] was incorrectly recorded as Julie Daigle instead of the German surname Kaigle. This was not uncommon in Quebec where the priests recorded what they thought they heard in the foreign sounding name.
