Biography

William Davis Kahl was born on 11 Mar 1829^[1] in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He is sometimes referred to in records by his middle name, Davis. His parents are unknown but likely carried surname Kehl. See research notes below.

William married Maria (Rotchford) Kahl (1836-1899) on 21 May 1856 in Clinton County, Iowa.^[2] They have two confirmed sons (and may have had other children who died as infants):

• Gilbert LeRoy Kahl (1857-1939)
• Edwin Marcus Kahl (1859-1933)

1860 US Census:^[3] W D Kahl was listed as 30yo and born in PA. He was living in Cahola Twp, Breckenridge County, Kansas with his wife Maria (23; NY); their children Gilbert (3; IA) and Alick M ([Edwin M], 1; IA); and Maria's (presumed) brother, Robert Rotchford (27; Canada).

1870 US Census:^[4] Davis Kahl was shown as 41yo and born in PA. He was living in Neosho Twp, Morris County, Kansas with his wife Maria (33; NY), their children Gilbert (13; IA) and Edwin (11; IA) - plus two other Kahls (relationship unknown): Benjamin J Kahl (21; MD) and Clara Nelson Kahl (15; IN).

1880 US Census:^[5] Davis Kahl was listed as 52yo and born in PA. He was living in Neosho Twp, Morris County, Kansas with his wife Maria (43; NY). His parents were described as born in PA.

1900 US Census:^[6] William Kahl was listed as a 71yo widower, and born March 1929 in PA. He was living in Neosho Twp, Morris Co, KS with his son Edwin Kahl (41; IA) and daughter-in-law Elizabeth C Kahl (42; IL). His parents were described as born in PA.

1910 US Census:^[7] William D Kahl was shown as 81yo and born in PA. He was living in Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas with the family of his son, Gilbert Kahl (52; IA).

William passed away on 14 Oct 1913^[1], probably in Manhattan, Kansas, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas.

Research Notes

The Kahl surname appears to be a spelling variant of Kehl. Although the parents of William are uncertain, his living descendants match on AncestryDNA to descendants of the Kehl family that lived in Franklin and Berks County, PA in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

It seems likely that William's parents could be identified with further research.
