F.J.KAISER, AGED 84, DIES Civil War Veteran, Prominent Mason, Active in Church, Expires

Frank J. Kaiser, Civil War veteran and resident of Youngstown for more that 62 years, died of complications at 353 Scott St., Tuesday at 10 p.m.

Mr. Kaiser was born in Hadamar, Prussia, Aug. 21, 1842, the youngest of 11 children and the son of Frank J. and Elizabeth Kaiser. When 11 years of age he came to America with his parents, first locating in Cleveland, and later in Rock Creek, O., where he spent his boyhood. He was married Jan. 1, 1862, to Henrietta C. Halt of Rock Creek.

During the Civil War, Mr. Kaiser served with Co. C, 18th Regiment, O.V.I. He had been a member of Tod Post, G. A. R., for many years. Mr. Kaiser was a man of deeply religious nature and was one of the 12 charter members of the Belmont Ave. M. E. Church, when that church was organized in 1877. He remained a member to his death. He was the first financial secretary of the church, the Sunday school Superintendent, and for 25 years was the choir leader.

Active Mason

For many years Mr. Kaiser was actively identified with the Masonic Lodge, being a member of Western Star Lodge, No. 21, F. & A. M., Youngstown Chapter No. 93, R. A. M., and St. John's Commandery No. 20, K. T. At the time of his death he was the oldest postmaster of Western Star Lodge. He served in this capacity in 1881-1882. Mr. Kaiser was also a member of Mahoning Circle, No. 2, P.H.C.

When he first came to this city he engaged in the retail shoe business and later became the shipping clerk of the old Cartwright-McCurdy mill. He remained in this capacity for 30 years, when he retired.

Since the death of his wife in 1901 he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Greer.

He leaves the following children: Mrs. F. E. Probst, Mrs. C. J. Greer, Mrs. F. E. Wierman, and Robert W Kaiser of this city, and Orson O. of Pittsburgh. He also leaves 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the residence until noon Thursday when the remains will be taken to the Belmont Ave. M. E. Church to lie in state until the time of services, 3:30 p.m. Rev. H. H. Scott will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
