Obituary-San Francisco Chronicle 2/20/2005: KALMAN, James E. (Gene) - Lover of the arts and world traveler, born Oct. 1, 1922, died Feb. 16, 2005 in the home he rebuilt after the Oakland Hills fire. A WWII Air Force pilot, he will be most remembered for his activism in labor, peace and civil rights struggles. His partnership with his brother Ted, out of which came Kalman Mechanical, made a significant contribution to the construction of many buildings throughout the Bay Area.
