Mary was born about 1855. Possibly Ireland. Parents being John Kane and Mary Lacey.

1875 On the 18th day of October at the Roman Catholic Chapel Dumbarton, After Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Mary Kane, age 20, spinster, occupation Bleachfield Hand, residence 179 High Street, Dumbarton, married John King, age 23, bachelor, occupation Shipyard Labourer, residence 180 High Street, Dumbarton. Witnesses James Kane and Mary Kane.

1881 Residence 152 High Street Dumbarton. Possibly this is Mary King age 28 birthplace Ireland wife of John King age 30 years, occupation Shipyard Labourer, birthplace Ireland. Note: Looking at a birth in 1881, child born named Bridget Catherine Kane. The child referred to in this record was illegitimate and the mothers name was recorded as Bridget Kane , she claimed to have a paternity case against the father being a Patrick ( Casey ). Birth took place at 28 College Street, Dumbarton.

1881 On the 22 day of July at (------ Illegible), Registration Office Greenock by declaration in the presence of Mary Boyle or Murphy wife of John Murphy , Hammerman and Catherine Nelis (?) wife of Neil Dunleany (?) , Hammerman. Mary Kane age 35, widow, residence 44 College Street, Dumbarton, married Patrick Higgins age 45, widower, occupation Shipbuilders Labourer, residence 44 College Street, Dumbarton.

Widow of 1st Michael Kane ( forename recorded incorrectly ), Labourer, 2nd Patrick Higgins, Shipyard Labourer. Parents were recorded as Father Thomas King (dec), occupation Farm Labourer and Mother Bridget m.s. Gallagher, King,... ( both recorded incorrectly ) Informant and present at death John Higgins (son), of 15 Laidlaw Street, Uddingston.

Note: Son John Higgins, didn't get Mary's parents names right or 1st husbands forename. A bit of guessing and name mix ups on his part... Gallagher is his fathers mothers maiden name, Bridget is Mary's 1st husbands Mothers forename. and well Thomas King not sure where he got that from but Mary's 1st married surname was King and her husband's forename was John not Michael.

Note: Residence at time of death 15 Waddell Street... When Mary's daughter Bridget (King) Bell died in 1917, the informant was a Sarah McDonald ( sister ) , her residence was recorded as 15 Waddell Street.

The 1881 ( 3rd April ) Census which could be the couple ...one thing that concerns me is daughter Bridget King is not there as per ages given on some of her documents she was born between 1877 and 1881 ... ? Possible she was born just after census was taken ...?

Mary (Kane) King married 2nd husband ( Patrick Higgins ) on 22nd July 1881, a widow with her age recorded as 35, residence at time of marriage 44 College St, Dumbarton, Parents names match .....

Possible that John King ( 1st husband ) died between 3rd April - 22nd July 1881 ...? but no death found at Scotlands People indexes for a death between these dates....?

Located a female birth ( 8th May 1881 ) for a Bridget Catherine Kane ( illegitimate ) to a mother named Bridget Kane, housekeeper of 28 College St, Dumbarton, with a RCE (corrected entry ) which reads : that the mother Bridget Kane had claimed an action of paternity against Patrick Casey occupation riveter of Dumbarton as being the father of the female child.

So could it be that John King left his wife, due to her having an external relationship which produced a child ? to the father who was named as Patrick Casey ? .....

I have yet to locate any children born to John King and Mary (Kane) King... they married in 1875 - 1881....
