MR LEO THOMAS KARL
SUDDEN PASSING OF HIGHLY RESPECTED RESIDENT March 1948
It is with regret that the death is recorded of Mr Leo Thomas Karl, of Paterangi, which occurred suddenly this week (March 1948).
The late Mr Karl, who was only 38 years of age, was born at Paterangi and educated at the Paterangi school. After leaving school he took up farming which occupation he followed with success up to the time of his death.
Mr Karl married Miss Isobel Dunwoody, a member of a highly respected Ohaupo family nine years ago.
Mr Karl was a keen and prominent hockey player, being a member of the Waipa Association. He took an active interest in farming organisations.
He was held in the highest esteem and his exemplary, charitable and kindly nature gained for him the friendship and respect of all with whom he came in contact. His early and unexpected passing cast a gloom over the district and many expressions of sorrow and sympathy were voiced.
Mr Karl, who was a son of the late John and Elizazbeth Karl of Paterangi, is survived by his wife and eight-year-old son Terry.
The brothers are Mr John Karl (Pokuru), Mr Laurie Karl (Paterangi), and the sisters are Mrs Cecil Tarr, Mrs Len Spiers (Paterangi), Mrs Ivan Giles (Matangi), Mrs K. Craig (Huntly), to whom the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends have been extended.
The Funeral
The high esteem in which the late Mr Karl was held and the sympathy called forth by his sudden passing were very strikingly exemplified at the funeral, which took place at the Ohaupo cemetery.
Prior to the very lengthy cortege moving off, requiem mass ((especially in the Roman Catholic Church) a Mass for the repose of the souls of the dead.) was celebrated in the Ohaupo Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Ryan, the obsequies (funeral rites) being conducted by the Rev. Father Colgan. The casket was Accompanied by numerous floral Tributes. The Pall Bearers were Messrs; John and Laurie KARL, (Brothers), Len Dunwoody (Brother-in-law), Frank Karl (Cousin), Cecil Tarr (Brother-in-law), and Frank Cavanagh.
