Biography

Born on May 1, 1926, MARJORY HELEN KARL was the first of the Karl/De Groat children to be born in Albany. Albany was the paternal, Karl family's stomping ground but they had come from Rensselaer, NY, across the river, where the maternal De Groat side of the family lived, where her parents were married and where Marjory's older sister, Laurie was born. Marjory's father, FRANCIS, [known by his middle name Earl] was 19, and her mother, ANNA De GROAT, was 20 when she was born. The Karls and the De Groats were both railroad families and at this time many of the Karl clan would be found on Hunter Ave. near the West Albany railroad lines. The Stock Market Crashed in 1929. The 1930 census finds MARGARET ELIZABETH DE GROAT "Nana" and FRANCIS EARL "EARL" KARL with their children, Delores, Marjory, Ruth Mary, and Pat in Northampton where Roy Eddy and Aunt Millie [Marcella (Williams)] lived with son Frank Nelson Eddy. The Eddy's owned their home. But by December of 1931 the Karls were in the Town of Bethlehem where her younger brothers Francis and Donald were born. In 1935 they lived in Selkirk, again, where the railroad yards were. By 1940, the Karls were back in Albany on Buchanan St. Marjory and her siblings would have spent their teenage years during WWII in this neighborhood and family tradition dictates that she married HARRY* WILLIAM WHIPPLE on June 30, 1946, in the sacristy of the R. C. Church of the Blessed Sacrament nearby. Following their marriage, Harry and Marjory lived on Weymouth St in Albany as is recorded on their eldest son's birth record. But by 1950, the young couple with their first 2 boys had moved into Harry's childhood home on Lincoln Avenue with Harry's widowed mother-in-law, Ellen Marks Whipple and her brother-in-law, Louis Francis "Buddy" Whipple. They would soon find a place down the road a bit to settle in their own home. Their own Lincoln Avenue home in the Village of Colonie would become the home of ten children in 20 years, 8 living to adulthood. Marjory died on October 3, 1986, at Albany Medical Center Hospital post-operatively at the age of 60, from a stroke that followed surgery for metastatic colon cancer. Leaving her husband a widower, Marjory was buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, 303 Sand Creek Road, Colonie, New York. Many of Marjory's Karl ancestors and the Whipple ancestors as well are buried in his cemetery .
