Biography

Gustaf was born in 1859 at the annex of Bostorps Jackagård in Lenhovda, Småland, Sweden. His parents were the blacksmith Carl Carlsson and Regina Henriksdotter and his godparents Johan Johansson and his wife Charlotta Andersdotter. The parents moved around a bit in the first years of his life, in 1860 to Älghult and next year to Mäcklarhult, Nyadal, but in 1863 settled down in Rosdala, Alstermo in Älghult.

In 1875 Gustaf moved to Kvarterbo Östergård working as farmhand. On November 22, 1878 he moved on, to Björkshult in Fagerhult, arriving Dec 8. working again as a farmhand. On year later, in Novmeber 1879, he moved back to his parents in Backstugan Rosdala in Älghult and the following year he starts working in the farm Blötskog Storgård. One year later, he married Fredrika Karlsdotter from his hometown. He then moved in with his wife and her parents in Hökhult where she had born their first son, Gustaf Albin. The family were housed in their "backstuga". In 1882, their second child Carl Arvid Conrad is born there and later that year, they move to Sävsjöström Ironworks where Gustaf worked in the stables.

On January 31, 1885, their daughter Signe Hulda Elisabeth was born. In 1886 they move to Norraby Södergård "säteri" (seat farm) in Söraby parish where Gustaf worked in the stables. The farm also produced vodka ("brännvin"). Being an absolutist, he was trusted with the task of delivering this alcoholic beverage to the harbour in Kalmar for exportation. This is how he found out about the small farm Gillbonderyd Källsmålen in Älghult to which they later moved, in 1893. However, the caveat was that he could not get time off to see it before buying it. This was taken care of instead by his wife Fredrika, who eight months pregnant with their fourth child walked the 70 kilometers from Norraby to Alsterfors by foot and then back again next day!

In Norraby Södragård, the daughter Alma Teolinda Augusta is born (in 1887) and the son Axel Hjalmar (in 1889), as well as Agda Regina, who died less than 1 month old. After the family moved to Källsmålen in Älghult, in October 23 1893, they have their third daughter Ellen in 1893 and their fourth, Helga Edith Maria, in 1896. The same year the widow Charlotta Jonsdotter is housed in their farm.

In 1925, Gustaf and Fredrika adopt their grandson by Ellen, Nore Wallis Wilhelm Sääf, who moves in to the farm. They later sold the farm to Ekeström Alster although they were staying housed in it. Gustaf passed away in 1933.
