Rose was one of seven children in the family of Peter and Katherine Ehinger Kartes.[1] She grew up in Edwards Township, Ogemaw County, Michigan, where her father farmed.[2]
Rose married William Laughlin Nolan when she was 22 years old.[3] They farmed in Big Creek Township, Oscoda County.[4] They were the parents of five children, Edward, Daniel F., John H., Mary Jane, and Isabell Rosanna. [5]William died in 1930, leaving Rose a widow at age 34, with five young children to raise.[6] Rose supported herself by taking in washing and cleaning.
Rose married William Stewart in Mio, Michigan on October 10, 1942. Rose's two youngest children were still at home when she remarried. William died May 30, 1944, leaving Rose some rental cabins which provided income for the family.
Rose died at age 75 and is buried in Big Creek Township Cemetery, Lucerne, Michigan.[7]
