D-M doctor aided alcoholics
Dr. Victor Kaufman Jr., a civilian doctor at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base who used his own struggle against alcoholism to help others stay sober, died Tuesday. He was 75.
A funeral Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Road. His body will be cremated.
Kaufman established four Alcoholics Anonymous groups at the base and, in all, founded seven of the groups.
He helped savve Hedrick House, formerly known as Serenity House, from bankruptcy and donated $1,500 a month out of his salary for two years to support the alcohol recovery center, according to the family. In addition, he served on the board and was the recovery center's 24-hour advisor. He also was a board member and advisor for the Tucson Recovery Center.
Kaufman joined the U.S. Civil Service after working 10 years in his father's practice in Canton, Ohio. He became an alcoholic, but was able to continue his work.
In 1972, Kaufman stopped drinking and joined Alcoholics Anonymous while practicing medicine for the Civil Service in Denver. He transferred to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in 1975 and realized a need to help military people who were alcoholics.
He won the Government Employees Insurance Co. Public Service Award in 1986 for his work in alcohol abuse prevention.
Kaufman received his bachelor's degree from Kent State University and received his medical degree from the Ohio State University School of Medicine in June 1944.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Tucson; two daughters, Karen and Sally, both of San Francisco; and Elizabeth's children: sons, Terry Millot of Cleveland, Tom Millot of Indianapolis, John Millot of Oxnard, Calif., and Mike Millot of Vandalia, Ohio; and daughter, Cathy Bell of Oxnard, Calif.
