Betty Kay (aka Key) was born in about 1817 in Ramsbottom or Holcombe, Lancashire, England. Her father was James Kay.
Her birthplace is listed as Ramsbottom in 1861 and "Houlkham" in 1851. Houlkham doesn't seem to exist, but Holcombe is less than a mile from Ramsbottom.
Betty Kay (of full age, Spinster, Piecer, residing at Tom-Litter Bridge, daughter of James Kay, Bleacher) and James Hindle (of full age, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at Foxhill Bank, son of William Hindle, Labourer) were married on 1 Jan 1839 at St James' Church in Church Kirk, Lancashire - the witnesses were Robert Grimshaw & Jane Hindle.[1][2] The marriage was registered in Blackburn, Lancashire in the first quarter of the year.[3]
Betty and James had ten children:
Sarah Ann Hindle (1838-) [born before they married, she was christened as Sarah Ann Kay but she used Hindle on census records]
In 1841 Bettey Hindle (age 26) lived at Aspin in Whalley, Lancashire with her husband James (27), daughter Sara (2), and son William (0).[4]
In 1851 Betty Hindle (age 34) lived at Warren Lane in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire with her husband James (35, Labourer in Chemist Works) and five children: Sarah A (12, Scholar), William (11, Scholar), Elizabeth (6, Scholar), Rachel (4, Scholar), and Alice (2).[5]
In 1861 Betty Hindle (age 43, House Keeper) lived at Barlow Row in Oswaldtwistle with eight children: William (20, Mechanic), Elizabeth (16, Cotton Power Loom Weaver), Rachael (14, Cotton Power Loom Weaver), Alice (11, Cotton Power Loom Weaver), Henry (9, Scholar), Jane (7, Scholar), Christopher (5, Scholar), and Nancy E (2).[6] Betty was the head of household, but she was still listed as married.
