James Keating was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
James Keating died young.
James Keating was baptized in 1849, along with his sister, Mary Margaret, at Fitzroy River, Portland, the children Patrick Keating and his wife Mary (Davidson). Since it wasn't until 1851 that the Colony of Victoria came into being, they were born in the Colony of New South Wales. [1][2]
Death. James accidentally drowned in 1863, aged 14. [3]
The Argus, Saturday 13 June 1863 - Page 4
A very sad accident occurred at Keilor on Wednesday morning, at nine o'clock. A lad named James Keating, about fifteen years of age, the son of a widow, was, while obtaining from the creek a cart-load of water for his employer, Mr. Milburne, accidentally drowned. The lad took his horse too far into the bed of the creek, and when turning the force of the current upset the horse and cart, and the boy also. A log of wood in the creek stopped the cart and horse, but the lad was taken on by the flood, and his body has not since been recovered, although a large number of persons have been searching the creek on a raft constructed for that purpose, Mr. Milburne, the lad's employer, being the most active. What renders the accident the more melancholy is, the lad was the principal support of his widowed mother. [4]
Burial. The Keilor Cemetery records show James is interred in the Presbyterian portion, Area B, Grave 360.[5][6]
