Ellen Keeley, daughter of Giles (labourer) and ?Euty Abi, was baptised on 1 December 1850 at Ilmington, Warwickshire, England. [1]
Seven month old Ellen is listed in her parents' home, at 54 Back Street, Ilmington, in the 1851 Census. Her father Giles's occupation is listed as Farm Labourer, and her mother Eutyabi as Field Labourer. Also in the home was her 2 year old brother William. They were all listed as having been born in Ilmington. [2]
By the time of the 1851 Census, the family were living in Herefordshire. There were now another five children in the household. [3]
In the second quarter of 1869, Thomas Pritchard and Ellen Keeley married in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. [4]
At the time of the 1871 Census, Thomas and Helen Pritchard, and their two young sons George and James are listed living in The Village, Lower Bullingham, Hereford, Herefordshire, England. Thomas's occupation was listed as Agricultural Labourer. Helen was recorded as born in Ilmington Warwickshire, and Thomas as born in Abbey Dore, Herefordshire.[5]
In 1876, Thomas, a 32 year old labourer, and Ellen, 22, emigrated from England on the vessel Hereford with three children: George (5), James (4) and Thomas (2). They were listed as assisted migrants, and landed in Canterbury on 14 Jul 1874. [6] They settled in Ashburton.
Thomas and Ellen had at least another six children in New Zealand from 1876 to 1893.[7]
Thomas appears to have worked as a labourer in Ashburton. In 1882, the names George Keeley and Thomas Pritchard appear on a land document for two acres in Ashburton. [8]
Seventy nine year old Thomas died in Christchurch in 1915. [9]
Ellen died in 1928. Obituary Mrs Helen Pritchard After a long illness, Mrs Helen Pritchard, widow of the late Mr Thomas Pritchard, and one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Ashburton, passed away at Christchurch this morning, aged 79 years. Mrs Pritchard, with her husband, settled in Ashburton in 1876, two years after their arrival from the Old Country. Leaving Ashburton in 1913, Mr and Mrs Pritchard went to reside in Christchurch. She was a member of St. Stephen's Church, and always took a keen interest in the activities of the various bodies in that church. On going to Christchurch, Mrs Pritchard was connected with St. Mary's Church, Addington. She leaves six sons Messrs R & W Pritchard (Ashburton), Messrs A.J. & E. Pritchard (Christchurch), Mr J.F. Pritchard (Cromwell), and Mr T. Pritchard (Sydney). [10]
Ellen's parents, Giles and Abi and their two daughters, along with her brother William and his family also emigrated from England on the Hereford, on the same voyage.
