Biography

Annie Elizabeth Keeling was born in 1880 in England. She married John Pennell Knowles in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1903 and, although often referred to as Mrs J P Knowles, she was more frequently referred to in newspaper reports as Vivie Keeling, her stage-name. Vivie had a musical career in her own right, as a singer (contralto) and performer at concerts and musical productions, both in Tasmania and on the mainland. [Vivie had earlier (1903) toured South Africa.] She appeared in several J C Williamson Productions and often in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. Newspaper reports of her performances occurred regularly over the period from 1897 to 1925, highlighting her popularity in both Hobart and Melbourne.

Annie Elizabeth Knowles died in 1958, at the age of 78 years, and is buried in the same grave as her husband, John Pennell Knowles, in the Cornelian Bay Cemetery in Hobart.

The birth of a daughter (un-named) to Annie (Vivie) and J.P. Knowles was announced in the Hobart Mercury on May 31, 1904, (birth date: May 27)^[1], and, although the birth notice stated that mother and daughter were "both well", no further information on this daughter has been found up until her divorce from Edward Henley Ricketts in 1932/33. ^[2]
