Biography

Wright Kelly, son of Jonathan and Nancy Kelly, was born in Kentucky in March, 1937. His father, who was originally from Virginia, was a farmer in Harlan County, Kentucky. He married Hannah Lewis about 1855. In 1860, they were living and farming in Harlan County and had three children, John, Mary, and Nancy. They were still there in 1870, but now had 8 children since the addition of Martha, Benjamin, Alexander, Joseph, and Robert. By 1880, Bismark, Minty, and Lucy had joined the family.

Wright was a Kentucky State Republican legislator throughout most of the 1890's, as well as for a brief term around 1923.

In 1900, Wright and Hannah were living in Garrard County, Kentucky, and only one child remained at home -- daughter Laura. Their 16-year-old grandson, Harman Metcalf also lived with them. After Hannah died in 1909, Wright lived in Berea, Kentucky, boarding in the home of William West and his family. Wright died in 1925 and is buried in the Berea Cemetery, Berea, Kentucky.
