Biography

John was born in 1847. He passed away in 1931.

Mr. and Mrs. John T. Kennedy by Marie M. Kennedy OBrien

The Kennedy family arrived at Mondak from Minneapolis Minnesota in the spring of 1907. The father, John T. Kennedy, and son Edward "Ted" arrived first and stayed at the Tom Kennedy and Dan O'Connor ranch for two months while they looked over the country. They then sent for the rest of the family, Mrs. John T. Kennedy, son, John D., and three daughters, Florence, Jane and Marie, who had insisted on bringing two Scotch collie puppies, Roxey and Pupsey.

An incident of their arrival was getting across the river in a rowboat. The river was in flood and the man ferrying them across objected to such a big load, six people and two pups. Jane and Marie insisted on taking he pups so they all crowded in. They crossed the first channel, unloaded, dragged the boat a sandbar, reloaded and crossed the second channel which was caused by the river being in extreme flood condition. It was plenty frightening as the river was really boiling.

The Kennedy and O'Connor ranch was located on the river bottom where Ellen (Nell), an older daughter, had come previously to keep house for her brother, tom, and cousin Dan. The Kennedy family settled on the Stuart place for some time. While living there, Florence, Jane and Marie walked four miles to the Ridgelawn School where Mr Hicks was the teacher. The men folks worked on the ranch for Tom and Dan. Later John T. Kennedy filed on a homestead on Hay Creek. He and John and Ted worked the ranch and ran some cattle and sheep.

The Kennedy log house was well known in the neighborhood and seemed a meeting place for Sunday evening gatherings of young people. Jane and Marie attended the Hay Creek School through the eighth grade. Their dad had gotten the two girls a pony and made a two-wheel gig (known by everyone as Erin-Go-Braugh). They had no trouble in getting plenty of passengers on the way to school. They attended high school in Sidney.

Florence went to St. John's Hospital in Helena, Montana for her nurse's training and graduated as a registered nurse in 1917. She followed her nursing career for more than 30 years in Montana and Los Angesles, California area.

In 1917 the Kennedys disposed of the ranch and moved to Sidney where they bought a home.

Jane took a business course at Minot, North Dakota and then worked a short time for the O.J. Lacy Insurance Company. Later she was appointed deputy clerk of the court in Sidney under Guy L. Rood.

In 1925 Mr. and Mrs. John T. Kennedy, Florence and Jane moved to California and settled in the Los Angeles area. Jane had a varied career in the business world and retired from Internal Revenue Service in Los Angeles where she still resides.

In 1917 Marie went to Helena for her business course. She worked in Sidney in the clerk and recorders office and several other positions in Sidney and Billings, Montana. After marriage in 1921 to Homer P. O'Brien, who worked at the Sidney Herald, they settled in Basin Wyoming where two children were born. [redacted to protect privacy living person] and James Kennedy. They moved to California in 1929 and still live in the Los Angels area.

Tom Kennedy married Delia Waterman and had one daughter, Lovera. After ranching in Montana and doing extensive traveling he settled in the Los Angeles area.[1]
