Biography

The son of James Keyes and Sally (Peters) Keyes, Horace was born in St. Lawrence County in 1834. In 1850, he resided in the household of Everitt Keyes, his uncle, and farmed there in De Kalb.[1] His family migrated west to Michigan where, in 1860, they resided in Blendon Township, in Ottawa County. Horace enlisted in the 1st Regiment of Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, Company FG.

He enlisted as a Private on October 11, 1861; his final rank was 2nd Lieutenant, being discharged on December 31, 1865.[2][3]

After the war, Horace married Julia Amanda Solomon (1844-1915), the daughter of William and Amanda Solomon. They married in Grand Rapids on October 26, 1866.[4] Their children included:

  1. Edward Chapman Keyes (1867-1926)
  2. Martha E. "Mattie" Keyes (1872-1926)
  3. Abigail S. "Abbie" Keyes (1877-1938)
  4. Gertrude Idell Keyes (1881-1961)

They made their home and farmed in Grant Township, Michigan, in Oceana County.[5][6] In addition to farming, Horace also worked as a clergyman in Grant Township. In 1900, his daughters, Abbie and Gertrude, both worked as school teachers.[7] They also had a boarder, 11-year-old Horace Knudsen.

Horace passed away in Grant Township at the age of 67 and is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery (43-4-w2) in Montague, Michigan, in Muskegon County.Find A Grave: Memorial #95740749[8]
