Biography

Caroline was born about August 1865.

• Came over in 1882 - per 1900 US Census
• Husband Jacob came over in early 1881 per 1900 US Census
• As young child in Switzerland placed in servitude on a farm at an early age. Her mother was windowed and not able to care for her 3 children. All placed in servitude
• Her mother found Caroline after she turned 12 but was rejected by her mother's new (2nd) husband
• Placed herself in servitude again to learn a skill. Eventually coming to the US as an indentured servant to the Youngerman family.
• Married in US sometime around 1882 to Jacob Ritter. Both of Swiss ancestry with craftsman skills
• Lutheran
• 107 Putnam address - US 1900 Census - Rented
• Husband built 147 Putnam St home (see Clara Ritter profile for more on 147 Putnam)
• Learned to read, write, and do math in order to become a US Citizen
• Two children (Clara and Otto)

1920 City Directory shows Caroline and child Otto at 147 Putnam. Shows John at 477 State? 1920 Census shows Caroline as Widow. 147 Putnam as address but rental? Caroline, Otto and Mamie Ritter (?) Is this Otto's wife? 1910 Census - shows window 27A Howard. Living with Herbert Fay and daughter Clara. (also kids of Clara, Otto and Mabel Fay)
