Biography

Lewis D. Kimbel was born about 1890, possibly in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Francis Kimbel and Belle Craner.

In the 1900 census Lewis Kimble (age 10), student, was the boarder of William B White in Mendon, Saint Joseph, Michigan, in the same household as Frank Kimble (age 40).^[1]

In the 1910 census Lewis Kimbel (recorded/indexed as Louis Kruble, age 20), laborer, was the single son of Francis Kruble in Springville, Wexford, Michigan. The image is somewhat difficult to read.^[2]

On 11 September 1914, Lewis Kimball (age 22), son of Frank Kimball, married Caroline Yoder (age 21) in Mancelona, Antrim, Michigan. Lewis' mother's name on this record was listed as Unknown.^[3]

In the 1920 census Louis Kimbel (age 27) was the married head of household in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, Michigan.^[4]

In the 1930 census Lewis Kimbel (age 38) was the married head of household in Big Prairie Township, Newaygo, Michigan.^[5]

In the 1940 census Lewis Kimball (age 47) was the married head of household in Boardman Township, Kalkaska, Michigan.^[6]

In the 1950 census Lewis Kimball (age 57), cutting pulwood, was the married head of household in Springfield Township, Kalkaska, Michigan.^[7]

Lewis D Kimball died (age 89) on 17 June 1981 in Manistee, Manistee, Michigan.^[8][9]

He was buried in Marilla Cemetery, Manistee, Michigan.^[10]

Research Notes

• It appears that Lewis and some of his relatives favored the spelling Kimball, though other close branches of the family used Kimbel. More research is needed.

• No birth record for Lewis has been located. A few records use Indiana as the location, though other have it as Pennsylvania. Some have his birth in 1890 (such as the 1900 census) and others as October 1892 (death record). More research is needed.

• In appears there is an indexing error on FS in the 1900 census, with a record showing Lewis as a border in the household of George Tobe. However, George is a head of household on the line following Lewis. The accurate reading of the image has Lewis as a boarder in the White household.

• Lewis's wife, Caroline, may have been married before. Her maiden name may have been Reed or Reid. More research is needed.
