My grandfather was sent to Bras D'or, C.B., N.S. to live with relatives when he was about 8 yrs. old. He travelled on the train from Brooklyn to C.B. by himself with only a note pinned to his coat, telling who was to pick him up upon arrival. Amazing!! He was also a cripple due to an accident when he fell out a rocking chair. In his younger days he worked as a farmer and a blacksmith. In the time I knew him, worked at the coal mine in Florence as a carpenter. He was a wonderful man.
