Sarah was born in Alabama in 1831 to George Washington King and Elizabeth Dickey. Her marriage is an enigma, and though her husband's last name, Steele, is known, his first is not, (though it's believed to be Joseph) their marriage date is not, nor are his birth or death dates. Sarah had a daughter, Catherine, in 1851, who is listed with her using the last name of King in her father George's 1860 Census . Later, Catherine uses the last name Steele. It's not clear if Joseph Steele is her father, stepfather, or adopted father.
By the 1880 Census, Sarah had moved from Alabama to Arkansas and listed herself as a widow. However, sometimes women said that rather than claiming to be divorced, so it's not known if Joseph was still alive. She lived with her married daughters throughout the years until she passed away in 1923 at 92 years old..
