Biography

The son of Charles King and Sarah Thomas, Charles was born in Michigan in 1855. In 1860, his mother was the head of the household, working as a dress maker in Midland, Michigan.[1] In 1870, Charles, age 13, and his sister, Clara, age 15, were living in the household of George B. and Dorcas DeGroff in Denmark Township, attending school. There is no indication if if the children were boarding, had been adopted, or were also working in the household. The only other member of the household, other than Mr. and Mrs. DeGroff and the two King children, was Mr. DeGroff's 74-year-old father. Both he and he son worked at joining, in carpentry.[2]

Charles married Mary L. Youmans (1859-1894), the daughter of Eleazer James Youmans and Jane Harriet Andrews, in Denmark Township on December 31, 1878.[3] He was living in Gilford Township and farming at the time, and she lived in Denmark Township. Their children included:

  1. George F. King (1879-1896)
  2. Albert E. King (1883-1930)
  3. William J. King (1887-1957)
  4. Sarah Jane "Jennie" King (1889-1979)
  5. Alta May King (1891-1919)

Mary passed away in 1894 and Charles remarried, marrying Alma M. "Allie" Nichols. By 1920, they had moved back to Lansing, Michigan, where Charles worked as a carpenter for an automobile company and Mary taught music at home.[4] He passed away from the effects of heart disease at the age of 78, being treated at Reo Motor Car Company Hospital in Lansing, Michigan.[5] He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing, Michigan.[6]
