Biography

It is not clear when Jack Kirksey married Melissa. They appear on the 1860 Brooks Co., census. He is listed as an overseer. Melissa died within two years and Jack moved his family to Taylor Co. where his family lived and he would have help with his young children. It is not clear if Jack and Melissa had three or four children. Benjamin Franklin, Julia, and Nancy appear on the 1860 census but Belle appears later and says she was born in 1862. Are Nancy and Belle different children or are they the same person?

He met the widow, Betty Griffith nee Dickson, and they married. She had 2 children by John Griffith.

Grandpa Jack and Grandma Betty (Sarah Elizabeth) had eight of their own children.

According to a news article in the Butler Herald, as he left the mill he had a run-in with a 50 pound beaver. He killed it with a stick. Was his father working at the mill? Was he? Did he purchase flour or other grain there that day?

Jack Kirksey was said to be a stage coach driver at one time but in 1860 according to the Brooks Co., census, he was an overseer. He moved to Taylor Co., around 1862 as his wife Melissa had died and he needed help with his very young family. Most of his siblings and his parents were in Taylor and Crawford Counties. He operated a store in Taylor Co. His granddaughter, my Aunt Nora, recalled going into the store as a young child and being given a piece of candy.
