The "History of Morris County, New Jersey", Munsell and Co. NYC 1882, states on page 32 under the title "Revolutionary War Militia: "At a meeting of the Committee of Morris at the house of Capt. Peter Dickison at Morristown on Thursday, the 14th day of May, 1775 the Committee having inspected and examined the several muster rolls of 6 companies of militia, members of the County of Morris and found that a sufficient number of men, as directed by Congress have called to recommend to the Committee of Safety the following officers to be commissioned,, to wit - " (amongst others) 2nd Lt. Moses Kitchell." This was probably the first company to be raised in the Hanover neighborhood.
The State of New Jersey, Department of Defense states "It is Certified, that the Records of the Department show that MOSES KITCHELL served in the active military forces from New Jersey during period of the Revolutionary War, 1775 - 1783, as follows.
Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Capt. Samuel Ball's First Company, from Hanover, New Jersey; Col. William Winds Battalion of Minute Men, Morris County Militia Sept 14 1775
Served as Lieutenant under various Captains, Eastern Battalion, Morris County Militia in service July 1780.
Received Certificate No. 452 amounting to Lbs. 16:16:4, for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the Morris County Militia ***"
