James was born on 2 Apr 1819, the son of John Knarston and Janet Brown; he was Christened on 17 Apr 1819 in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland.^[1]

He married Margaret Graham Sinclair in St. George In The East, London, England on 24 Sep 1849.^[2][3] Their children were:

• James Knarston, born about 1854
• John Henry Knarston, born on 29 Apr 1856^[6]
