Biography

Elizabeth (Knight) Christmas was born in Hampshire, England.

Elizabeth's birth was registered during April-June 1839 at Alton, Hampshire, England when her mother's maiden name was recorded as Coombs.^[1] She was baptized the daughter of George Knight, a labourer, and Elizabeth Coombs on 2 June 1839 at Froyle, Hampshire.^[2][3][4]

In 1841 when aged 2, Elizabeth was living at Kiln Cottage, Upper Froyle, Hampshire, with her parents George, an Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth along with her siblings.^[5]

At the time of the 1851 census Elizabeth was aged 11 and still living with her parents and siblings at Froyle.^[6]

Elizabeth, aged 19 and a spinster, married James Christmas (20), a bachelor and a labourer, at the Froyle Parish on Christmas Day in 1858 (25 December 1858). The couple's fathers were recorded as Daniel Christmas and George Knight, both labourers. The witnesses were Peter Knight, probably Elizabeth's brother, and Martha Knight. The signatories to the record, James, Elizabeth, Peter and Martha all signed with an 'X' indicating that the education system in the area at the time hadn't advanced to the level of teaching all young people to read and write.^[7]

By 1861 Elizabeth (22) was living at Turkey Street, Alton, Hampshire, about 6km from Froyle, with her husband James (23), an Agricultural Labourer and had given birth to her first child, James, now two. Next door was a Daniel Christmas (28), probably James' brother.^[8]

Elizabeth's death (age 29) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1868 in the Alton district.^[9]
