John Knowles was born April 25, 1759, in the coastal town of Rye in the Province of New Hampshire. By May of 1776, John was living in Candia, New Hampshire, where he enlisted in the Continental Army at the age of 17. He first served in Capt. Joseph Dearborn's company in Lt. Col. Senter's regiment until January 1, 1777, when he was discharged at Mount Independence in Vermont. During this service, John was in the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain under Gen. Benedict Arnold. His next service was under Capt. Stephen Dearborn in Col. Thomas Stickney's regiment. He was in Gen. John Stark's brigade at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777, where he was badly wounded by a musket ball that went through his left sixth and seventh ribs and exited near his spine, leaving him with a cough and back weakness for the rest of his life. His final enlistment in March of 1778 was in Capt. Worthen's company under Col. Stephen Peabody, taking part in the Battle of Rhode Island on August 29, and he was discharged on December 31, 1778. [1]

After his revolutionary service, John returned to Rockingham County, New Hampshire, where he was married to Lydia Chaplin by Rev. Ebenezer Flagg at the Chester Congregational Church on May 13, 1781.
