Biography

Birth

Abraham was born either September 4th or 5th ( there are records with both dates) 1756 in Beverly, Massachusetts Bay, the son of Abraham Knowlton and Miriam Cole. The Stocking History and Genealogy of the Knowltons has him listed twice with different parents. On page 61 of the History Abraham is listed as the son of a John and Lucy with the ID number of 594. On page 31 of the Errata to the History Abraham is listed as the son of Abraham and Miriam with an ID number of 391A. Birth records prove that Abraham and Miriam are the correct parents. In addition, there is no marriage record for the John and Lucy or any record of them having a son Abraham or any other children.

Abraham married Anna Taylor on July 6, 1777 in Wenham, Massachusetts.

Abraham was a Revolutionary War soldier[1] who served as Minute-man on April 19, 1775. He may have been commissioned 2nd Lt. on May 7, 1776 but the pension records list him as a private. He might have been paid for losses at Bunker Hill: Captain Rodger's Co., 3d Essex Co. Reg. Massachusetts.

Abraham enlisted May 1775 as a Private in Capt. Richard Dodge Company, Col. Loammi Baldwin's 38th Regiment. Served 8 months to the end of 1775.

Re-enlisted January 1776 in the same unit as his brother Jonathan. Capt. John Low Company, Col. Hutchinson 27th Regiment of Foot. Massachusetts Continental Line. Served all of 1776. Discharged Jan 1777.

Also, Capt. Robert Dodge's Company, Col. Jonathan Titcomb's Regiment. Served from April 25, 1777, 2 months, 8 days in Rhode Island.



Residence

Abraham and his family lived in Wenham, Massachusetts. His original Revolutionary War Pension file application is filed from Wenham in 1818. But by 1823 he gives an affidavit for his pension file as a resident of Vermont.

Abraham passed away on April 13, 1829 in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont.
