Family and public records confirm his name. He was named after Huldrych Zwingli, the German/Swiss Reformed Pastor. In census records he was listed as "Kehlin Koonce." Historian David Reynolds Koontz said this in his book, Johannes Kuntz, updated 1999 and again in April of 2006:

"K. Z. Koontz, private, enlisted at Petersburg, VA., at age 21 on 08 Aug 1862. He enlisted in Co. G., 7th Reg't Confederate Calvary on 03 Sept 1862. While AWOL from this company, he transferred to Co. M., 7th Confed. Calvary in January 1863. Arrested & returned to duty with Co. H, 48th regiment in May-June 1863. Captured at or near Cold Harbor, VA., 03 Jun 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, MD., 11 Jun 1864. Transferred to Elmira, N.Y. 12 Jul 1864. Released at Elmira on 03 Jul 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Penn Kelin Zwingley (also spelled Swingley & yes, I have seen this as his name!) was son of David Koontz (1792-1879) & Sevele Magdalena Evans. He was born 13 Dec 1842 & died: Date unknown. K. Z. married Eliza J. Perrell 28 Nov 1865. He was administrator of his Aunt Mollie's estate on 27 Sept 1875. K.Z. & Eliza moved to Virginia." [Johannes Kuntz, by David Reynolds Koontz, 1999 updated edition]

Military: "Koontz (Koonts), Penn Kelin Zwingley Private, Company H, 48th Regiment N.C. Troops. Kelin was born on December 13, 1842, to David and Sevele [Evans] Koontz. He was named after the founder of the German Reform church. Kelin worked as a farmer prior to being conscripted into service at Petersburg, Virginia, on August 8, 1862. There is some question regarding his service in the 7th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. He was reported present until he was captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia, on June 3, 1864. Kelin was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until June 11, 1864, when he was transferred to Elmira, New York. He was confined at Elmira until July 3, 1865, when he was released after taking the oath of allegiance. After the war, Kelin returned home to the Tyro township where he married Eliza Perrell on November 28, 1865. Kelin and Eliza would have one child, C.L. (1868), before moving to Virginia prior to 1880. No further records." [The Civil War Roster of Davidson County, North Carolina, by Christopher M. Watford]
