On 01 Feb 1943 Miami Beach, FL, Carl enlisted in the Army Air Corps and his rank was private. He was married, had a 4-yr HS education and resided in Queens, New York City, NY and was an electrician.[8] Carl became a pilot and was stationed in Michigan for training before transferring to Texas.[4]
According to a report dated 28 Sep 1943: Mrs. Carl Kromer, whose husband is stationed at Tarrant Field, and came here (Ft. Worth, TX) from Michigan, saw her first cattle auction last week when she attended the Ross Brothers sale with Miss Lucy Hart and 0. Smith of the John Clay Commission Company, Fort Worth.[9]
Carl graduated pilot class 44-B at Ellington Field (AAF) near Houston, TX.[10] As a pilot he served in the United States as a transporter of goods and trained bombardier in San Angelo, TX. Kay followed Carl to his assignments in Michigan and Texas, often on railroad trains. Carl was discharged from the Army Air Corps in war 1945 or early 1946.[4]
After the war, Carl and Kay lived in New York City; renting a home in Ozone Park, Queens and buying a house in Woodhaven, Queens in 1949. Carl became a career firefighter for New York City and worked hard to become a Battalion Chief. In 1970, he suffered a heart attack. Later he had by-pass surgery and hardening of the arteries.[4]
In 1971, Carl retired and he and Kay migrated to Clearwater, Pinellas Co, FL. He enjoyed playing golf a Cove Cay Country club with his family who had moved there. For some time, he also worked as a county building inspector. Abt. 1997, Carl had an abdominal aneurism but recovered.[4]
Carl d. 21 Dec 2000 at home Clearwater, Pinellas Co, FL in his sleep, in his recliner, while watching a football game.[4] He was buried Calverton National Cem, Calverton, Suffolk Co, NY and his marker shows he was a 1LT US Army Air Forces, World War II.[11]
KROMER, CARL CLEMENS, 81, of Clearwater, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000) at home. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came here in 1970 from Queens, N.Y., where he retired as chief after 28 years with the New York City Fire Department. He was a pilot in the Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was Catholic and a member of Cove Cay Country Club. Survivors include three sons, Stephen, Summerville, S.C., Michael, Maplewood, N.J., and Carl Jr., St. Petersburg; a daughter, Judith Ann Sparanese, Mission Viejo, Calif.; a brother, Clemens Kromer, Clearwater; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Moss-Feaster Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Belcher Road Chapel, Clearwater.[12]
