Raymond joined the Canadian Merchant Navy in 1943 as an Ordinary Seaman. He took sick with smallpox at 944 on board the ship Kildonan Park off the coast of Calcutta, India and was taken to hospital where he died on 19 Feb 1944 at he age of 19. He is buried in Lower Circular Road Cemetery, in Calcutta. [2][3]
