Atwell was born in Greenwich in 1891.[1][2] He was the son of Atwell Lake and Constance Turner. He was a career officer in the United Kingdom Royal Navy. From June 1942 to July 1945 he was Chief of Naval Staff in the Royal New Zealand Navy. In 1945 he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. He inherited the Lake baronetcy in 1924.
He married on 20 Jul 1922 Kathleen Marion, daughter of Alfred Morrison Turner. Their children were: Atwell Graham (b. 6 Oct 1923), Willoughby Alfred (b. 31 Aug 1925), Edward Geoffrey (b. 17 Jul 1928).
He passed away in 1972. His death was registered in the 4th quarter of 1972 in the Horsham district of Sussex, England.[3]
