APPRECIATION LATE ELIJAH LAMB

The death on July 12 of Mr. Elijah Lamb at the ripe old age of 88 years, removes yet another of the links in the chain connecting past and present. A native of Lower Portland, Elijah Lamb (known everywhere as 'Man' Lamb) was the last surviving member of the large family of sons and daughters of John and Alice Lamb, river natives and very early pioneers. Alice Lamb herself was a member of the Wall family, and both names — Lamb and Wall — have passed into oblivion on the Hawkesbury. The Lamb property was the well-known farm at the junction of the Colo and Hawkesbury. In 1889 Peter Kemp, then champion sculler, of the world, purchased the property, built a large stone house and lived there for some years. In course of time the late Clyde Jones, nephew of 'Man' Lamb, became owner of the property, and it is still in his family's possession. The deceased 'Man' Lamb was a brother of the late Mrs. William Jones, of Lower Portland, and was also related to the Christie family. For many years he held a responsible position with a North Sydney boat building firm, but eventually the lure of the land brought him back to his native river, and he purchased a property at Freeman's Reach. After some years at 'the Reach' he sold out and went to Lismore. The untimely death of his wife, while they were Freeman's Reach residents, was a severe blow to him. 'Man' Lamb was a genial soul, who possessed the gift of making friendships and retaining them. Let us hope that after life's fitful fever he sleeps well.
