Biography

William was baptised at Barking on 24 May 1782. He was the son of John and Sarah.^[1]

He married Mary Banyard on 14 September 1802 at Barking, Suffolk.^[2]

They had six known children together between 1803 and 1820, all baptised at Barking.

In the 1841 census, William and Mary were recorded with their 30-year-old daughter Mary Ann at Barking, Suffolk. Also with them was their daughter Mahala, her husband Samuel Gosling, and their two young children Henry and Frederick Gosling. Their eldest son William was living with his family a couple households away. Their other children had married and were also living in the Barking area, except Emma who is so far unaccounted for (see notes).^[3]

In the 1851 census, William and Mary were recorded at Barking with their widowed daughter Mary and their 13-year-old grandson Henry. William was still recorded as an agricultrual labourer at the age of 70.^[4]

Mary died in 1853.

In the 1861 census, 80-year-old William was recorded as an agricultural labourer on Needham Road, Barking. With him was his unmarried daughter Mary Ann (aged 58).^[5]

William died aged 88. He was buried at Barking on 31 January 1868.^[6][7]

Research Notes

Daughter Emma was baptised in 1815, and was named as the spinster mother of William and Mary's grandson Henry Lambert in 1838 but no other definite records for her have been found.
