Jack Stewart Lamming was born in or after 1922. He was the son of Florence Maud, nee Long, and her husband Joseph Matthew Kirton Lamming, who endowed him with the middle name of Stewart which they took from that of Maud's sister Auntie Annie's son, Charles Stewart (Annie Hare, née Long). Jack Stewart was brought up in the Long family home on Earl Street in Grimsby. He attended Wintringham G.S., and went on to enjoy a University education at Belfast and at Cambridge, graduating with the degree of Ph.D.
During World War 2, Jack rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. He married Diana, and together they had two sons: Philip and Guy. Jack carried out research into the semiconductor properties of gallium and indium. At the GEC Hirst Research Centre in Wembley, he worked on the research and development of transistors, obtaining a number of patents.
In 1986, Jack and Diana were guests at the wedding of Alan Hare (a second cousin of Jack) and Sally Gaisford at Hockerill Church in Bishop's Stortford.
Later in life, in his retirement, Jack introduced a new partner, Beryl, to his cousin Stewart Hare and Stewart's wife, Miriam.
