Joseph was born on 15 May 1764 in Addingham Parish, Cumberland, , England. He was the son of William Lancaster and Elizabeth (Benson) Lancaster. Hunsonby Parish, Addington, Cumberland, England. He was christened 8 November 1766 in Salkeld Greater Cumbria, England.

Joseph arrived in Montreal, Lower Canada, Canada on 21 July 1827.[1]

Joseph died at the age of 84 on 2 February 1849 in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada.[2]

We do not have a birth date. for Mary Ann but believe that she was the daughter of John Watson of. Addingham, All of Joeeph and Mary Ann's children were baptized at p,. Addingham. All ot their children were married in England but Richard. their youngest. Joseph was Schoohmaster at Robbery (a small village a short. distance from Hunsonby where they probably lived). Joeeph was also. parish clerk at St. Michael's the pariah church of Addingham for. nearly 30 years. In 1810 Joseph bought a messuage and tenement (a dwelling house. with its outbuildings and adjacent lands) at Winskill from James Bird,. °of the yearly rent or 2d'. In the 1829 Parsons and White Directory or Cumberland and. Westmoreland, Joseph is listed as scboolmaster -residence Hunsonby. However, we have a record stating that he and his family except Mark. emigrated to Canada in 1828. It could be that the book was compiled. in 1828 and printed in l829, explaining the discrepancy. Records show that the Lancaster family sailed from Maryport,. Cumberland and the voyage took 9 weeks. They landed at Montreal,. proceeded up the Ottawa River by steamboat and settled at Cote St. Charles area in Quebec. In 1831 the first school house was established at Cote st. Charles and Joseph was employed as the schoolmaster. The school. closed again in 1836. In 1837-38 under Matheson, Joseph with 23 sons and grandsons. bore arme in defence of the country. (Major Matheson's Vaudreuil. Loyal Volunteers). In 1841 Joseph was appointed Parish Clerk ot the new Parish of. Vaudreuil, then meeting at Cote St. Charles. In 1842 the corner stone of the st. James Anglican Church in. Hudson was laid beside the Protestant burial grounds (in use since 1819: Joseph was said to have had 100 grandchildren and 32 great. grandchildren.
