The 1901 England and Wales Census lists John as a 40 year old married man living with his wife, two step-children (who have now taken his surname), a son, and a daughter at Great Cheverell, Wiltshire. His occupation is recorded as labourer on farm.[2]
The 1911 England and Wales Census lists John as a 49 year old married man living with his wife in Cheverell Magna, Wiltshire. His occupation is recorded as agricultural labourer and his nationality as British.[3]
His son Arthur's military record indicates that in May 1915 John was living at 7 Hay Way Cottages, Upton Scudamore, Warminster, Wiltshire.[4]
