Biography

Johan Peter Laux was born in 1726 in Germany ( his ancestor settled there after being exiled from France because of the family's devotion to the murdered King Henry IV).[1]

Johan Peter Laux came to America on the ship called Patience, information on voyage can be found on pg 551 in "The Loux Family of Bucks County."[2]. To pay for his transportation he bound himself as an indentured servant to John Haines who 4 years later would become his father-in-law.

Johan Peter Laux married Catherine Hains and had children Barbara (1754-1829 , married Jacob Salade), John , John Jacob (1759-1825), John Peter (1760-1825), Catharine (1763-1785, married Lawrence Kramer), Andrew , Elizabeth(born 1769 married Henry Bryan), John Adam (1771-1859), and Maria Magdalena( born June 1775 married Michael Lutz).[3]

Johan Peter Laux died in February of 1799 he and wife Catharine were buried at the Tohickon Reformed Church. [3]

  • Laux was original spelling; it was changed to Loux around Civil war. But Loux is what my family used, so that's why some of same family may have different spelling)

There are about thirty different spellings of the name Loux, originally from da Laux in France about 1000, to today. The cursive writing style allowed misinterpretation as the years went by, a's became o's, x's looked like cks or chs with our without s's so anything that sounded like the last name worked. Even Ephraim Loux was listed in the Civil War Records as Lonch.
