Biography

Jean Lavoie was born in 1855 in Le Bic (today, part of Rimouski), Canada East, to Pierre Lavoie and Elisabeth Lawlor. He was baptized Jean Louis at the church of Sainte-Cécile.^[1]

The census of 1861 finds Jean living with his parents and four siblings in the nearby parish of Saint-Germain in Rimouski.^[2] Before 1871, the youngest child must have died.^[3]

In 1879, "John" (per the marriage record) married Marie Lavoie, daughter of Germain Lavoie and Marie Ursule Ross.^[4] By 1881, "John" and "Mary" were settled in Rimouski with one child, as well as a female relative.^[5] There is an uncertain match to the 1891 census. By 1901, Jean and family were in Saint-Octave-de-Métis.^[6]

According to the death record, Jean migrated to the United States around 1925, perhaps about the time that his US-immigrant daughter Graziella lost her husband. Jean settled with his wife Marie in Dover, New Hampshire.

Jean died in Dover on 3 April 1931.^[7] The record indicates that his body was interred in Saint Charles cemetery in Dover on 6 April. However, Marie died on 18 May, and there are burial records for both of them in the registry of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in Mont-Joli, Quebec.^[8]

Notes

Jean Louis was born on 2 January 1855, and was baptized the same day in Le Bic. He was the son of Pierre Lavoie and Elisabeth Lawlers.^[9] He married Marie Lavoie on 27 January 1879 in Rimouski.^[10]
