Biography

Ireland Native
John Lawn Sr was born in Ireland.

John was born in Ireland, probably either in County Armagh (where the Lawn family was from according to family stories) or County Mayo (where they are listed in records prior to emigration).

In 1833, John Lawn and Co. were tenants at will in the townland of Toomore in County Mayo.[1]

John married Catherine Hanaghan/Heeneehan in February 1840 in Toomore, Mayo. Witnesses were Robin Lawn and Jane Roch.[2][3] The marriage record of George Lawn in Calumet Island in 1856 lists his parents as John Lawn and Ann “Thager” of Calumet Island, almost certainly this John and a previous wife.

John was the first of the family to emigrate. John Robinson’s 1845 survey of Calumet Island mentions ‘Lawn’ (probably John and maybe his brothers too) on Lot 13 in the 4th range, with about 5 acres cleared. At the time, he was the only person living on the 4th Range.[4] He was granted land in Calumet Island in 1857.

In 1861, John (farmer), his brothers (probably) William (labourer) and Robert (labourer), his son George (farm labourer), George’s wife Bridget and children John and Anne lived on Calumet Island.

In 1870 or 1871, John Lawn Jr. went to Canada to find the rest of his family, and Catherine and Timothy followed him in 1871.[5] The 1871 census lists John, his brothers William and Robert, and his wife and children on Calumet Island, finally reunited after at least 25 years apart.

The 1881 census lists John Lawn as a farmer of Calumet Island, Pontiac, Quebec, Canada aged 70, born in Ireland [6]

John was buried on 3 Aug 1897 at Ile-du-Grand-Calumet, witnessed by his sons John and Timothy.[7]

Research Notes

His birth year is an estimate based on George Lawn's tentative birthdate. Censuses and church records have varying birthdates: 1801, 1806, 1807, and 1811.
