John was born in 1880[1] in Roos, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of John Laws and Charlotte Carrick; the family lived in Anlaby, Yorkshire, in 1881[2] and 1891.[3]
At the time of the 1901 census John worked as a waggoner for the Scruton family in Bishopsoil, Yorkshire.[4]
In 1901 he married Kate Leighton after banns were read in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[5][6] By 1911 the family lived in Anlaby, Yorkshire, where John worked as a coppersmith's labourer at a railway locomotive depot.[7]
