Biography
Thomas was born in about 1883. He was the eldest son on Robert Laws and his wife Jane Isabel, nee Eland.
IN 1898 he was studying at Fortitude Valley, QLD.[1] He was studying music with Trinity College, Brisbane in 1904.[2]
He married Laurence (Lawrie) Elizabeth Brown at Trinity Church, Fortitude Valley, QLD on 31 May 1905. His parents lived at Bulimba at that time.[3][4] There were 3 sons and 2 daughters.
BY about 1905 Thomas was a Queensland State School teacher. In 1907 he was transferred from Fortitude Valley Boys School where he was an assistant teacher to Kolan North (near Bundaberg).[5] He was transferred to Junction Park (Brisbane) in early 1909[6] and to Woolloongabba in late 1909.[7]
Thomas was a head teacher at Eight Mile Plains near Brisbane in 1918 when he was transferred to Calliope, QLD.[8] In 1922 he was transferred from Goombungee near Toowoomba to New Farm, Brisbane.[9] In 1928 he went from Eagle Junction to Brookfield.[10] He moved to Kenmore, QLD in 1930[11] where he was headmaster.
Thomas was actively involved with Rugby Union in Queensland, officiating as a referee for 27 years. He also officiated as a centre umpire for tennis.
By 1934 he was living at Taringa, QLD.
Thomas was a very active member of the ALP and in 1941 ran as the ALP candidate for the Queensland State seat of Toowong.[12]
He was the Chief Warden for the Taringa Air Raid Precautions (ARP) in 1942.[13]
