Maria Lawton was born in about 1857 near Mottram, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom. Not much is known about her early life.

When she was about 20 years old Maria married James Chadwick. Their marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1877 in the Ashton district.^[1] Together they had 4 children.
