Emily Lax was born on 29 December 1879, her birth was registered in Queensland as Emily, however, the name Eliza and or Elizabeth were added as her second Given name. She is the daughter of Philip Sidwell Lax and Janet Young. Her mother's name was registered in Queensland as Jeannette and she became known as Janet.

Married in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to Alexander Ogilvy on 8 December 1909, they had no children.

Death occurred on 24 April 1958; death registered as Emily Ogilvy; burial at Toowong Cemetery in the Lax family Plot
