Joseph was born 23 Mar 1875 at Milton, Moshulatubbee District, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, the son of James Leard and Cora McCarty. Joseph passed away 20 Jul 1961 at Hugo, Choctaw, Oklahoma. He is buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma.[2]
