No record has been found of the birth of Sophia Warren Leathe, and her ancestry is unknown. The 1880 census shows her as 88 years old, born in Massachusetts,[1] and that age is consistent with her age of 96 yhears, 2 month, at her death in May 1888, as shown on her gravestone.[2] See the Research Note below for a discussion of her name.
Marriage
On 20 Sep 1816, Miss Sophia Leathe of Jay, Maine, and Mr. Abijah Rowell of Livermore, Maine, (both towns were then in Massachusetts) published at Livermore their intention to marry, and they married at Livermore on 21 Oct 1816.[3]
No record has been found of the death of Sophia Warren (Leathe) Rowell. She probably died at Livermore, Maine, where she was living with her husband in 1888. Her gravestone at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls, Maine, gives the date of her death as 29 May 1888 and her age at her death as 96 years, 2 months and is also inscribed with the dates 1792-1888.[2]
Research Note
Sophia Rowell's gravestone calls her "Sophia Warren, Wife of Abijah Rowell."[2] The most common interpretation of such an inscription is that it shows the maiden name of the wife, or occasionally a first married name. In this case, however, "Warren" is almost certainly her middle name. The record of her marriage intention calls her "Miss Sophia Lathe" and tghe record of her marriage calls her "Miss Sophia Leathe,"[3] implying that her surname at the time of the marriage was Leathe (or Lathe) and that it was her first marriage. In the 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, a generally reliable secondary source, her name is given as "Sophia W. Leathe." The "Warren" may be a clue to her ancestry; Abijah and Sophia Rowell named a son Edwin Warren Rowell. (Bloom-1124 19:47, 23 February 2020 (UTC))
