Matilda was the daughter of John son of John de Legh and his wife, Matilda, daughter of John de Ardene.[1]
Matilda was married to Richard, son of John de Radecliff.[1]
Matilda and her husband were both living in 1355-7.[1]
"John de Legh, who, in the right of his wife Elizabeth, succeeded to the manor of Sandbach on the death of his father-in-law, Richard de Sandbach, had an only daughter and heiress, Matilda de Legh, who married Richard de Radcliffe, the son and heir of Sir John de Radcliffe, of Ordsall, near Manchester, knt. Richard de Radcliffe, of Ordsall, Esquire, succeeded his father in 1358, but died on the 19th July, 1380, being drowned in Rossendale, according to tradition. His Inquisition post mortem, which was taken at Chester in Sept. 1380, does not, however, mention Sandbach, but is of interest, as showing how he held the half of the manor of Mobberley in right of his wife."[2]
In 29-30 Edward III [25 January 1355-24 January 1357], at Chester, Richard, son of John de Radecliff, and Matilda his wife, sued Isabella, formerly wife of John de Legh Chivaler, for land in Modberlegh, which John de Ardene gave to John de Legh for his life, with remainder to John, son of John de Legh, and Matilda, daughter of John de Ardene, and to the heirs of the bodies of John de Legh and Matilda:[1]
In The Visitation of Cheshire in the Year 1580 Made by Robert Glover, Richard Leigh is said to be the son of John Ligh and his wife, Isabel Sandbach, grandson of Sir John Leigh of Bouthes, and Richard and his wife, Maud Arderne, were parents of Maude who was married to Richard Radcliff of Wordsall.[3]
However, this is disproved by the contemporary court case on the Chester Plea Rolls of 29-30 Edward III [25 January, 1355-24 January, 1357], in which Richard, son of John de Radecliff, and Matilda his wife state that her father was John, and her grandparents John de Legh, and Matilda, daughter of John de Ardene.[1]
