Biography

Johann Peter Leiss/Lays was born in 1748 in Marienberg, Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis, Sachsen, in what is today Germany. He was a son of Johann Peter Leiss (1725-1806) and Catharina Elizabeth Mann (~1725-bef. 1781).

Immigration: 29 Sep 1753 arrived at the port of Philadelphia aboard the ship Rowand, Capt. Arthur Tran, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes.

Military service

5 Sep 1776. Sergeant Peter Leis appears on a muster roll for Captain Michael Furrer's Company of the Berks County Militia, stationed at South Amboy. Other sergeants listed include Adam Anspach, Philip Anspach, and Henry Spang.[1]

About 1780, Peter Leiss married Anna Margaretha Seiler (1754-1817), probably a daughter of John Christ Seiler (b.~1725- ) and Elisabetha Gertraud Schuman.[2] The couple had the following children:

  1. Anna Maria (1781-1865) m Johannes Filbert (177-1857); 8 children
  2. Johannes Peter (1782-1837) m Catharine Barbara Keiser (1784-1854); 4 children. Migrated to Miamisburg, Ohio
  3. Anna Margaretha (1784- ) m Martin Gerhard; 4 children
  4. Henrich (1792-1825) m1 Elizabeth Spang (1792-1814); 1 daughter, m2 Barbara Schulman; 2 sons

Research Note

24 Jul 1819. Peter Leiss married Anna Barbara Seiler (1772-1853) at Zion Lutheran and Reformed Church, Womelsdorf, Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Witness was Eva Spang. ?? This Anna Barbar Seiler was christened 16 Aug 1772 at Host, Berks, Pennsylvania.
